💡 Book ASAP — July is peak winter tourism in Tasmania. Jetstar is cheapest (from ~AUD$89/pp one-way if booked early). Virgin Australia offers more flexibility. QantasLink is premium.
⚠️ Launceston (LST) is an alternative — $20-50 cheaper but limits southern aurora access. Stick with Hobart (HOB) for aurora chasing.

  • 18:30 Dinner in Hobart or Cygnet (Huon Valley)
Aurora Hunt #2 — Bruny Island (Cape Bruny) — Prime Night

Moon: 3% illumination — essentially NEW MOON! This is the BEST aurora night of the entire trip.

Option A (Best): Stay on Bruny Island after sunset! Cape Bruny Lighthouse is one of the BEST aurora spots in Tasmania — zero light pollution, 270° southern ocean horizon, and tonight the moon won't interfere at all. Limited accommodation: Bruny Island Long Point Cabin or camping.

Option B (Return to Hobart): Take the late ferry back, then drive to South Arm or Mt Wellington for aurora viewing. Still excellent conditions with near-zero moonlight.

🦪 Food highlight: Get Shucked is world-class. The oysters are shucked minutes after being pulled from the water. Also try the smoked oysters — they sell jars you can take home.
Day 6 — South Arm + Cockle Creek + Aurora Night 3 Thu Jul 23
  • 08:00 Breakfast in Hobart
  • 09:30 Drive to South Arm Peninsula (30 min from Hobart)
  • 10:00 Walk along the coast — Opossum Bay, Clifton Beach
  • 12:00 Continue to Cockle Creek (1.5 hr from Hobart) — southernmost road point in Australia
  • 12:30 Lunch — pack a picnic or fish & chips from the takeout shop
  • 13:30 Short walk to South Coast Track start — dramatic coastal scenery
  • 15:00 Explore the area — Partridge Island visible offshore, Antarctic-facing coast
  • 16:30 Drive back toward Hobart
  • 18:30 Dinner at Templo (modern Chinese) or Monogram (cafe-bar) in Hobart
Aurora Hunt #3 — Cockle Creek / South Arm

Option A (Best): Stay at Cockle Creek until after dark (21:00+). This is the southernmost accessible point — virtually no light pollution, completely unobstructed southern horizon facing Antarctica. The ultimate aurora spot. Bring extreme warm gear — exposed coastal wind in winter is brutal.

Option B (Easier): Drive to South Arm Peninsula after dinner. Multiple spots along the coast with dark skies and clear southern views. Only 30 min from Hobart.

Day 7 — Tasman Peninsula + Aurora Night 4 Fri Jul 24
  • 07:30 Drive to Tasman Peninsula (1.5 hr from Hobart)
  • 09:00 Tessellated Pavement — incredible natural rock formations
  • 09:45 Devils Kitchen + Tasman's Arch — dramatic coastal geology
  • 10:30 Eaglehawk Neck — isthmus with unique rock formations
  • 11:30 Port Arthur Historic Site — convict ruins, UNESCO-listed (allow 2 hrs)
  • 13:30 Lunch at Port Arthur cafe or drive to White Beach
  • 15:00 Cape Raoul Lookout — 30 min walk, stunning cliff-top views (dolphins often spotted)
  • 17:00 Drive back to Hobart
  • 19:00 Farewell dinner at Stillwater (housed in 1830s mill, Tasmanian produce)
Aurora Hunt #4 — Tasman Peninsula

Option: Stay at Fortescue Bay after sunset. This secluded bay in Tasman National Park is extremely dark with a perfect southern ocean horizon. One of the most atmospheric aurora viewing spots — cliffs, crashing waves, and the southern lights. 30 min extra drive from Port Arthur.

🏛️ Port Arthur is Tasmania's #1 historic site. The convict ruins against the backdrop of the ocean are haunting. Allow at least 2 hours.
Day 8 — Hobart Morning + Fly to Melbourne Sat Jul 25
  • 08:00 Breakfast at Jackman & McRoss (best bakery in Hobart)
  • 09:00 Salamanca Market (if Saturday!) — artisan food, crafts, local produce

  • 12:30 Lunch at MONA's Source Restaurant or the Bar
  • 14:00 Return to Hobart CBD, return rental car
  • 15:30 Flight HOB → MEL
  • 16:50 Arrive Melbourne, pick up rental car
  • 18:00 Check in Melbourne hotel near airport (early start tomorrow)
  • 19:00 Dinner at Hardware Societe or Tiny's Bar — final Melbourne meal
🎨 MONA is Australia's most visited art gallery. It's underground, dark, provocative — and the ferry ride from Hobart CBD is part of the experience. Allow 3+ hours.
Day 9 — Departure Sun Jul 26
  • 09:00 Breakfast, check out
  • 10:00 Drive to airport, return rental car
  • 11:25 Arrive at MEL for check-in (3 hrs before flight)
  • 14:25 CX104 departs MEL → HKG
  • 21:45 Arrive HKG

Aurora Hunting Plan

Why July 2026?

July is deep winter in southern Australia — the longest, darkest nights of the year. Solar Cycle 25 is still active (peaked mid-2024, declining but producing regular geomagnetic storms). Tasmania sits at ~43°S latitude, close to Earth's magnetic south pole, making it one of the best accessible locations for aurora australis.

Your trip has 4 dedicated aurora nights (Jul 21-24) plus backup opportunities on the Great Ocean Road and during any clear night. That's excellent odds.

Moon Phase — Lucky Timing!

DateMoon PhaseIlluminationAurora Quality
Jul 21 (Hobart)First Quarter24%⭐⭐⭐⭐
Jul 22 (Bruny)Near New Moon3%⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Prime
Jul 23 (Cockle Creek)First Quarter17%⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Jul 24 (Tasman Pen.)First Quarter37%⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌌 Jul 22 is the golden night. Only 3% moon illumination on Bruny Island = essentially zero sky brightness. Combined with Cape Bruny's darkness and southern horizon, this could be extraordinary. Consider staying overnight on Bruny Island to maximize this window.

Top Aurora Spots — Tasmania

1. Cape Bruny Lighthouse
Southernmost tip of Bruny Island. Zero light pollution, 270° ocean horizon. The #1 spot. Requires staying on Bruny overnight or late ferry.
5/5
2. Cockle Creek
Southernmost road point in mainland Australia. Facing Antarctica directly. No light pollution. Accessible from Hobart (1.5hr drive).
5/5
3. Mount Wellington / kunanyi
1,271m above Hobart. Elevated, dark, panoramic southern views. Cold and windy but close to the city (30 min drive).
4/5
4. South Arm Peninsula
Coastal area 30 min from Hobart. Multiple dark spots along the shore. Easy access, good backup option.
4/5
5. Fortescue Bay (Tasman Peninsula)
Secluded bay in Tasman National Park. Extremely dark, dramatic cliffs. Best combined with a Tasman Peninsula day trip.
4/5
6. Tessellated Pavement
Unique rock formations make incredible foreground for aurora photography. On the Tasman Peninsula, near Eaglehawk Neck.
3.5/5

Top Aurora Spots — Victoria (Backup)

1. Cape Otway
South coast of Victoria, dark skies, clear southern horizon over the ocean. 2.5hr from Melbourne. Best Victorian option.
4/5
2. Wilsons Promontory
Southernmost point of mainland Australia. Very dark but 3hr drive from Melbourne. Best for strong geomagnetic storms only.
3.5/5
